The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in last fall and given more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under house arrest pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after recent developments came to light.

This included attempting to break his tracking device and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a document approving the arrest, Justice Moraes said data from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on online platforms on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could offer prayers for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's decision was the potential of Bolsonaro's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a record of planning to request asylum through a embassy office", a declaration said.

The court filing underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brasilia, is located around 8 miles from his dwelling.

International Reactions

His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist United States President Trump, causing him to enact a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.

Bolsonaro is being held in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will have a detention review on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the High Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with tracking devices.

They also petitioned that he be permitted to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other health problems.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was convicted of leading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the national vote to his political opponent, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a scheme which encompassed plans to murder the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The scheme was stopped because it didn't receive the backing of the military leaders. His successor was sworn in without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised government buildings in the capital, Brasília.

The law enforcement took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been incited by him whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the 2026 presidential election.
